Two separate studies released recently have highlighted the impact the Covid-19 pandemic is having on the mental health of charity workers.

Ecclesiastical’s Charity Risk Barometer study found that nearly half of charities see staff burnout amid the Covid-19 pandemic as “a significant threat” to their operations, with remote working, redundancies and increased demand taking their toll on the mental health of charity staff.

Among the respondents, 44% said they see burnout as a significant threat to their operations and two-thirds said charity staff are experiencing an increase in stress levels.

Another study carried out by Third Sector found that 9 in 10 charity workers say they have felt stressed, overwhelmed or burnout over the past year.

The survey of more than 350 charity workers also found that the main causes of those feelings were the Covid-19 crisis, poor work-life balance, funding concerns and a lack of job security. More than four-fifths of the survey respondents said they were more likely to put themselves in situations that led to stress, burnout or feelings of mental exhaustion if their charity’s cause area or service users were going through a crisis.

With the mental health and wellbeing of charity staff an increasing concern, we have put together the below list of resources. These can help charities better understand mental health in the workplace and put measures in place to improve the wellbeing of their workers and volunteers.

Mental Health At Work is a website dedicated to providing advice, guidance and support to help employers.

They have a detailed Coronavirus toolkit to help during the winter lockdown and beyond, as well as hundreds of specific resources to help with mental wellbeing at work. For charities, they have a dedicated “Supporting staff mental health in the voluntary sector” toolkit.

The CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) website has a host of guides and factsheets on promoting employee wellbeing within your organisation.

This includes guides on employee health and wellbeing, low pay and financial wellbeing, managing and supporting employees experiencing domestic abuse, offering compassionate bereavement support and much more.

The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) has a dedicated series of publications, resources, tools and checklist on the subject of stress at work.

This includes a free PDF version copy of the book ‘Tackling work-related stress using the Management Standards approach’ – a step-by-step workbook to help your organisation meet its legal duty to assess the risks to its employees from work-related stress and gives advice and practical guidance on how to manage work-related stress.

The NHS Apps Library lists a host of different third-party apps that can be used by staff and managers to monitor and support mental wellbeing.

Some of the apps need to be paid for, but the majority of them are free.
